Lawsuit on the City’s Pattern and Practice that enable Pay-to-Play
Our current focus is on the greater Citywide issues that have been uncovered as part of our lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles. Wherein we focus on basic fundamental fairness in the City of Los Angeles, and invite your participation, as you see fit, to help end these practices of the City. These practices underpinned the pay-to-play scheme for which former Councilmember Jose Huizar and former Building and Safety General Manager Raymond Chan have been or will be sentenced to federal prison.
The City recently issued building permits for the project even though the trial in our lawsuit has yet to happen. The trial has been postponed until February 2027. To learn more about our lawsuit click this link.
Fire Saftey Appeal
We have appealed the building permits to LADBS and are primarily focusing that appeal on the fire safety issues. As part of that effort we are asking the public to sign a petition and send in letter to our elected leaders. See the links below.
For five years, the City of Los Angeles has failed to enforce state fire safety rules meant to protect residents who live in the state’s highest-risk fire zones. We need your voice now.
- Since July 1, 2021, the State Minimum Fire Safe Regulations have applied to new construction in LA’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ). They set minimum standards for road width, slope, turning radius, dead-end length, and setbacks so residents can get out and fire trucks can get in if there is a wildfire.
- The City never set up the required process to apply them. Planning, Building and Safety, and the Fire Department keep approving new hillside construction anyway – putting you incrementally at more risk with each new project.
- Meanwhile, the City told FEMA in its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan that it would “ensure compliance with State Minimum Fire Safe Regulations.” That plan qualifies LA for millions in federal disaster funds. The City repeated the promise in its 2025 Safety Element. Thus, the City is talking out of both sides of its mouth.
- Our group filed a test case appeal of building permits for a project at the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners. Staff of the Board say the appeal has merit but want to postpone the hearing to do more research. After five years of delay, the City should not need more time to just do what is right.
- We need to collectively put out a bureaucratic “fire” at City Hall just like old-time bucket brigades did before there were fire departments.
